Youth Fund Sports & Culture Netherlands

Enables children from less affluent families to participate in sports

In all countries, even in relatively prosperous countries like the Netherlands, some children are unable to join a sports club or participate in dance, music or art classes for financial reasons. These children miss the opportunity to enjoy these activities with other children. Activities that are very important for their physical-, mental- and social development and have a lasting impact on their lives. The Youth Fund Sports & Culture gives children from disadvantaged families a chance to participate.

The Youth Fund Sports & Culture pays the contribution / tuition and necessary equipment for children of families living below the poverty threshold in the Netherlands. The families do not have to apply for this grant themselves. The application is made by professionals who work with these families, such as teachers, youth care workers, or the family’s doctor. These intermediaries are key to the success of the Fund.

More about the Fund

Youth Fund Sports & Culture Netherlands receives funding from the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and from sponsors. Private partners include Menzis (insurance company), the Rabobank Foundation, Vriendenloterij and BankGiro Lottery (a national lottery in The Netherlands). The Fund has one small national office and 32 local funds that work closely together with more than 245 municipalities and over 8,000 intermediaries.

The Fund was founded in 1999. In recent years, the number of applications has been growing steadily by more than 100 per year. In 2017, we offered over 70.000 children a chance to play sports, dance and make music and art.
